A collection of vintage fabrics might offer just the inspiration you need to revamp your closed-in porch now that the Christmas tree is gone. A floral hook rug could cover the stain in the carpet. A needlepoint or cross stitch apron would look warm hanging from the old coat hooks. A few chenille bedspreads would be perfect cutters that you could work into covers for your old furniture giving it new breath.

A few pieces of Blue Willow or a few travel souvenir trays and glasses would be a nice touch to an area in your home that needs a little something.

Flea Market Sunday 11/6/11

We're doing one more First Sunday of the month FLEA MARKET here! Sunday 11/6/11, 8am - 4pm. You know you want to come... ;) We do these every month when the weather cooperates, and the weather did not cooperate with us a few times this summer so we had some cancels. But we're looking good for tomorrow!

We thought we'd take this opportunity to just share some pics and review some stuff about the Coop that you may want to know.

It's never taking a chance to come here during the Flea Markets, because we have a 10,000 sq foot building that's open for business during the outdoor events. So if the weather is poopy and we can't be outside, just come on in. More than 150 dealers occupying separate booths, offering a big variety of antiques, vintage finds, art, jewelry, gifts and collectibles. Everything from pianos to stuffed animals and more - something for everyone.

The booths are numbered sequentially. We call these numbers our Treasure Map Locations. It just helps narrow things down for you, to remember where you saw something, and to help us find your treasure if you call to make a purchase over the phone. Yes, you can do that!

Each booth/dealer sets their own prices and sales. So be sure to watch for those discount and sale signs, and remember that each one only pertains to that particular booth. Right now quite a few dealers have some big mark downs going on, in order to make way for Holiday/Christmas/Winter inventory.

Ornaments, vintage ice skates, gently used ski equipment, wool blankets and throws, reindeer and snowmen decor, holly pottery, sleighs, festive brooches and antique music boxes are all on their way. Keep checking in, there's a lot of turn over here!

We tend to have a lot of musical items here. CD's, cassettes, phonographs, guitars, marching drums, sheet music and more. Also, be sure to think of us if you're looking for VHS or DVD stock - hey something to do when the cable is out during a storm.

If you haven't already, friend us on Facebook! We're also on Google+ so let us know if you need an invite to join. We share vintage TV, commercial, and movie clips. We post lots of pics of the treasures here, we update the Wanted Board, share links and info about stuff going on here in our community and we enjoy interacting with our neighbors from around the corner and around the world. We love it when you tag yourself and your friends in our photos. It's a great way to let your buddies know what you'd like for Christmas, or to share a "remember when" or a laugh.

We're very animal friendly here. We love dogs, your dogs are welcome to come by here with you, and we're often hosting adoption days and awareness events to several area animal rescue organizations. There's a list in the sidebar on the website. Check them out!

Speaking of the sidebar on the site, that's where you'll find Hours, Directions link, address, and other info for us.

We enjoy having after hour events and private shopping parties. We love the Flea Markets and the parties. We have treasure hunts, and Facebook Trivia Contests, and all kinds of stuff going on. By the way, tables and sales opportunities at these events are open exclusively to our Coop family of dealers. If you're thinking about renting a booth and becoming a dealer, stop in and speak with Tzveta. See what booths might be coming available and get your name on that list! You'll be surprised at how easy it is to be a dealer. No floor time is required, we take care of taxes, snow plowing, paying the utilities, opening and closing, and all the other day to day business-y stuff.

Here at the Coop we realize times are tough and money is tight. You may only have the ability to make so many purchases with only so much money. We're really proud of the space we've created here. You can shop here with a Go-Green attitude, and your bucks can go a little farther.

From furniture, to McCoy, to the dashboard of an old car... from Steampunk to Victorian to the 1970's... from your grandmother to your godson there is something here for everyone. We have plenty of parking, 2 nice clean restrooms, a snack bar, and nice bank of cubbies where you can store your finds until you're ready to check out. It's a positive friendly shopping experience.

For those that aren't local that shop by phone or just like to keep tabs on us, we had a huge snowstorm last weekend that dumped about a foot of snow in some areas. With still lots of leaves on the trees, that meant for very heavy branches. Lots of trees downed and power outages. Most places are still recovering.

Autumn in New Jersey is always such a good time.

Corn stalks, pumpkins, haunted houses, hay rides, cornucopias, and great big piles of raked leaves. The turning leaves make the trees look orange and maroon and yellow.

New Jersey has lots of great places for zucchini bread and apple cider. Or you can go apply picking yourself. Or visit a real pumpkin patches. We have neighborhoods that decorate, kids that Trick or Treat. We have Halloween costumes and huge Thanksgiving family dinners.

Hockey season has begun. Everybody's wearing their sweaters and fleece, and breaking out the cute skinny scarves and the Uggs. It was a long, hot, wet summer in The Garden State and we're as welcoming as ever for Fall.

Here at the Coop there's lots of great inspirations, lots of nods to your memories that will bring smiles to your loved ones faces on Christmas morning. The odds are very good that there's something here for everyone. Something, that will have them saying, "You remembered!"

Many of our dealers offer their seasonal items, year round! If you collect Woolworth snowglobes, Anna Lee dolls, or blue ornaments for a white tree, you can keep a watchful eye out all year long.

Here's a tip: off-season items are sometimes priced less expensively than they are during their popular season.

Giving someone special a gift that shows you really thought about what they'd like is not commercializing the holiday. It doesn't have to be a big expensive mass-produced hoo-ha.

Give your grandfather a vintage Mets mug, with a card that says he took you to your first ball game, and you'll never forget that. Give your daughter a knee-hugger elf, tell her how your mother gave you one just like it when you were her age, and pass down some family traditions.

Give your mother a Beanie Baby that replaces the one the dog got hold of, or a little ornament that looks just like her favorite cat. Imagine the look on her face when you tell her you bought it months before. That tells her: I think about you a lot, not just the week before Christmas or your birthday.

How many times during the holidays have you felt really good, and thought "We need to keep this feeling all year long."

Treasure Map Location #117 for Dolls & More

StephsTreasuresOfPastAndPresent is moving a trove of treasures to the Coop this Friday. You'll be able to find these sought after dolls in Treasure Map Location #117, and we're all pretty psyched.

This is a Blonde Hair Sasha Gingham doll, with Box and Wrist Tag, Very Good Condition. $195.

Here's a Sasha Redhead Doll with Box and WristTag. Excellent Condition. Clean. Also priced at $195. She comes with the original white dress and tights. The dealer notes she has added white underpants and new red shoes to her as she arrived. She looks fantastic. The dealer said when she acquired this doll, it was quite dirty and needed a good caring cleaning and some new items to replace the missing originals. Great job, just look at her now.

Many of this dealer's doll treasures are so popular and well-priced that they sold before they even arrived here! Check these next two out below.

This classic blonde popular doll is a 1989, Gotz, by Sylvia Natterer, 18". She is all vinyl. She had been very well priced at $145 in her brand new outfit, all cleaned up. And yup, she's already gone!

And last we have a Sasha Brunette Doll. Her name is Marina and she's from the early 1980's. She is a collectible doll from Serie England. This doll was in mint condition with her Wrist Tag and the original box. Her hair was full, soft and curly on the ends and the doll and outfit and hair were all very clean. She sold already at $200.

Treasure Map Location will certainly be a go-to spot for these collectible lovely dolls. But there's more treasure with this dealer than doll-finds. Here's This a fantastic piece of Stangl Pottery called Big Top #3915 Square Ashtray. It's in excellent condition - no chips, cracks or crazing. $225.

Labor Day Weekend

After Hurricane Irene had her way with us last week, we weren't sure how this holiday weekend would play out. Roads and bridges still need repairing, some people are still without power, and many of us have been strained, stressed, tested and taxed with the extra expenses and loss of work during the storm's aftermath.

At Scranberry Coop we believe we are part of a fantastic community. Not only are we in a terrific neighborhood filled with friends, reliable fire departments, wonderful emergency response services, and fellow business owners who care like we do, we are also part of a global community online. We are honored to have friends in Florida, New York, California, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Montana and all over the country. Some used to live here, some met us on vacation here, some connected to us through our Facebook page, or mutual friends.

Some of our community went through hardships this week with the hurricane. Many shared pictures, news, and personal updates online. Most often for us Facebook is a fun place where we share cool old videos, pics of Coop treasures, quotes, and newsy bits about events and specials. We get to share local artists, bands, businesses and animal rescue's events and happenings. And we love to see all of our community's updates. Everything from your awesome pet photos to your recipes, insights, and goings-on.

This week was a little different.

Seeing some of your posts was hard. Not seeing some of you online at all was even harder. The hurricane left many people stranded, flooded, wind damaged, and more. Roads were completely blocked, bridges were washed away, people were left without cell service, internet, or electric. It was sad, scary, and costly for many.

Facebook served as more than a fun place to talk about a movie you saw or some used guitars for sale here. It was a means of connection through some rough hours. People shared emergency response info, they shared photos of what they were going through, they updated everyone as power was restored and roads were cleared. It was really pretty amazing to see posts from friends down in the Carolinas, all the way up to our friends in Massachusetts, with everything from weather updates to suggestions on how to keep your dogs calm and kids busy during the rain and the blackouts.

We are glad to be part of your circles, we are hopeful that you enjoy being a part of ours.

So this weekend I think we were all ready to get out and get passed the storm funk. Yay! We are happy to say we were able to have our First Sunday of the Month Flea Market and we had a very nice turn out. Lots of people came to the Coop to do a little shopping, a little socializing, and a couple came to inquire about renting booths and joining the Scranberry Coop family of dealers.

Some bunnies hopped through on their way to new "fur-ever" homes, and even thought the skies got cloudy, the rain held out all day long for us.

Thank you all for visiting us, for friending us, and for spreading the word about us. Thanks for being our community, in person and online. Thanks for being you!

There's lots of faces at Scranberry Coop. Sometimes it's the face of an old friend, someone you used to know way back when. Sometimes it's a familiar face that reminds you of a time or place you used to be. Some faces are new and interesting. Some are shadows of other faces in time; a big sister, a grandmother, or maybe it's the face you used to see in the mirror that's echoed now in a treasured discovery.

Put a smile on someone's face when you hand them some small trinket that acts like a window to the past. Tell them, "I remember." It's one of the best compliments you can ever give.

Early that morning, we adorned the highway sign with balloons in our organization's colors. About a dozen of us then assembled outside for refreshments before starting this extraordinary shopping excursion. Thank so much for the mimosas! That was such a nice surprise, and they sure helped get us in the mood for a fun-filled day! The canvas totes and pens were also unexpected and greatly appreciated. Off to a great start, each of our gals found a treasure or two at your incredible store that was packed with goodies! Shopping at Scranberry Coop is always fun, but this was a very special outing for us. Many thanks to both of you!

Going, Going, Gone!

Just as any other successful store will tell you, stuff gets sold here!

If you see something when you're shopping around at the Coop, there is no guarantee it will be here when you return. Even if you're on the phone asking if something is still here and one of our Coop staff finds it and answers you, the next second someone could be buying it, and it's gone.

That's why we've implemented our Shop By Phone option.

This is a 10,000 square foot building of treasures, from 150 different dealers. There's lots of stuff, lots of turn-over, lots of cool things coming in all the time. Since every individual dealer stocks their own booths and sets their own pricing, there's no way anyone can ever have an inventory of exactly what's here at any time. Asking us if we have any [insert cool thing here] is not the most effective way to find your treasures. Even if someone did look through the entire shop and answer you, a second later that answer could change. 3 more could come in, the 4 here could sell. You never know! That's how it is with a store that's open to the public.

That's why we've implemented our WANTED Board.

Since there is such a variety of unique treasure here from vintage finds, Steampunk, antiques, gifts, collectibles, art, jewelry, furniture, musical instruments, American pottery, coins, stamps, leather jackets, garden statues and more more more, we can't conceivably list all the themes, categories and possibilities.

We also can't even begin to describe our incredibly eclectic customers! They range from teapot collectors, to young musicians, to Go-Green ecologists, movie set dressers, to teachers, to students, to experts, to people with an eye for decorating, to people embracing their memories, to people that are spendthrift, to people that just want to find a few Matchbox cars as conversation pieces for their new corporate office.

And since they vary so much, they have tons of different interests. Our community is awesome, and varied, and friendly. They do all kinds of interesting things from discussing old retro television sitcoms, to going to the Motley Crue/Poison/New York Dolls concert tonight. They follow the Yankees or the Devils, they are firemen and police officers. They are mothers and business owners. They find great flea markets, they have their own shops and restaurants, they are pet owners, and crafters, and photographers. They are excited to share info about the other places in the community they have enjoyed.

That's why we implemented our Facebook page.

On Facebook we can share vintage videos footage, post pics of items that have been in the shop, discuss collecting, decorating, antiquing, Green ideas, events around town, and learn about the interests of other neighbors and friends.

We've also implemented after-hours parties with private shopping, The Collector's Club, our First Sunday Flea Markets during pleasant weather, fundraising events for our local animal rescue friends, Online sales and auctions, and more.

Think - H G Wells' The Time Machine, or K. W. Jeter's Infernal Devices.

Think - Victorian era Great Britain.

Think - alternative history, or, history of speculations for the future. But, that the future is still technically in the past.

"Steampunk" has been used since the 1980's to describe a certain aspect of science fiction which embraces inventions, building, technology, and contraptions, as they would have or might have been from about 1830 through about 1930.

Imagine people in Victorian style dress trying to invent or build something mechanical. Imagine steam engines and steam power as the forerunner of known technology. Picture lots of gears, and steam, and smoke, and tubes. Picture grease, tools, holding tanks, factory stacks. crude wings and confounding contraptions.

Since much of this science fiction of Victorian history deals with travel, think about lots of globes, goggles, maps, compasses, clocks, wheels and wings. Ships, and captain's wheels. Travel trunks and big iron shipping containers.

Since this is fiction, there is no right or wrong to Steampunk. That means there is no such thing as something being out of place or time. If the contraption or decor involves a piece of technology like a can opener or a lighter that wasn't quite put together in that way until the 1950's, that's OK. It would be understood that you must have travelled forward in time, and brought that back with you. Or maybe it's from an alternate universe or another dimension.

Imagine lots of buckets of water for cooling things that got too hot. Imagine mason jars of bits and antique cans and boxes for greased cogs and thigamabobs. Picture pails of screws, clamps sprockets and whatnots.

And then take it all out of the garage and into every day life: the old leather suitcases, the Victorian gloves, jewelry, cloaks, scarves and hats. The travel wares and the daily essentials. The farm tools and kitchen items an inventor would be using and repurposing for his inventions; the inner workings of an old clock pulled apart, the lens from a camera, the alchemists's tins, the gears off of a simple kitchen hand mixer or whisker, the large claw hay baler used for something else.
